 Topic: 10 day old kittens Posted: 25 Nov 2009 at 10:15am |

I am a foster mommy for our local Cat Care in Port ELizabeth-South Africa
This is the first litter that I am looking after. I received the babies on day 1. We lost 1 little girl a few days later. She had some birth defects and her mommy was very sick,(biliary) and the mommy had to be put to sleep, she was to sick to be saved. These are feral cats that Cat Care captures and then has them spayed or neutered. The 2 little boys are doing well. They were +- 60g when we collected them and they are now 142g and 118g. I feed them every 3-4 hours but I see they do not whant to drink so much every feed. Do I now feed on demand I give them Kitty milk, it is a formula that I bought from the vet. I see that I now have to change the formula from 1 scoop powder and 2 water to 2 scoops powder and 3 scoops water per feed. They do not like the change in formula at all. I am also giving them Protexin (probiotic powder ) in every bottle...just a pinch. After loosing the one on Saturday I am so scared of loosing these 2.
I have decided that we are keeping these 2...there is no way I can give them away
Any advice would be welcome

I wouldn't change the formula as these babies have three strikes against them as it is. I would continue on with what works and feed them the richer formula because they need it. You are not out of the woods at all with these babies- but you know that. Be sure you keep them warm and be sure they aren't suckling each other when you leave them alone. Look for wetness and pressed fur around the bellies, the testicles, the rectum or the paws or tail. If you see it, you will need to separate the kittens yet keep them together. I can give you instructions about how to set up a sleeper area for suckling kittens. I would also add goats milk if you can get any to their daily feedings.

Thank you for the advice. They had a good morning bottle. I did not wake them during the night. Their eyes are open but I see that with one of them the little eye has closed again. I used a damp ( warm) cotton this morning to wipe it and the eye is full of puss, I will be takeing him to the vet this morning. Will post again to let you know what the vet said

Yolanda, I can put a care package together for you direct mail if you wish. Please PM me your address and I will put this stuff in the mail as soon as I can. It will help goopy eyes, plus there are some immune boosters for the little ones. You can just keep the stuff on hand if you need it.
Best of luck-

Oh my goodness! You look at these tiny beings and you are convinced, there is a God. :) And you are a guardian angel to care for them-

Unfortunately, somethings cannot be overcome, no matter how much we want them to. ALL you can do is what you are doing. Please know that for the first time in their short lives, these two kittens are warm, they have food, they are loved and comforted. This is hard on us to accept if they leave us, but if they do leave, they have felt love and that is so important.
I hope they pull through for you- but I never breathe until they reach four months of age because so much can happen in just what seems seconds

Hi Scratch
Thank you for your reply. I need advice please.
When I took our little girl to the Vet Friday they put her on
Gastroped...1 drop 2xday.(name on meds bottle is Biskopaar/Gastroped)
to help with the runny tummy. She has not gone again since the horrible
episode on Friday night, and I have taken her off the meds, I am not
sure if I keep her on it she will become constipated.
Little boy is still on Lactulose 0.2ml every 6 hours to see if we can get him to have a poo.
How long should I wait before I have to worry with them not passing a stool.
I feel so stupid, it is much easier raising human babies than kitty
babies. At least they are picking up weight......he is now 316 g and she
is 252g...it could also be that they are just heavy because of all the
poo

You can dilute the formula a bit with more water to help with the digestive problems. She could be heavy with parasites, or she could be genetically challenged and not have worms. It is hard to say. Sounds like from what you posted you have a litter of inbreds which is what happens when someone allows the same cats to mate and breed without neutering or finding otherhomes for them.
It would be so easy if you were in the states to tell you what helps and what you can get- canned pumpkin is the best for constipation, plus organic catnip, long blades of green grass, mineral oil.
They don't neccessarily poop every time they are fed and if older cats are around they often will lick the kittens and eat their waste.
