Topic: Mama hissing at kittens Posted: 23 Oct 2009 at 9:37am
I just had two 10 week old kittens spayed/neutered. When I brought them home from the vet, Mama kitty wont accept them. She hisses, growls and swipes. She wont let them get near her. The two kittens wont get near each other either-they are all growling and hissing. They were not feral cats-I've been fostering them since they were a week old. I brought them home yesterday afternoon. Previous to my vet visit they were still nursing a few times per day. They were only gone for 10 hours. Is this normal?

It is very normal and mom is driving them off her. They are hissing at each other because they both don't smell the same, they smell like all the stuff at the vet's office and this is a scary scent for cats. You can alleviate the kittens hissing at each other by putting some real vanilla extract on their chins, and the base of their tails. You will have to do this several times a day to make them smell the same. Suggest you get mom spayed and the kittens off to a good adoptive home soon. No reason for them to be nursing off her now.

Thank you so much! They are acting better this morning. Both are scheduled to go to the shelter for adoption, I'm just fostering them for a few more days while they recover from surgery. I'll foster the mama 'till her milk dries up, then she'll go in to be spayed and adopted.
