my cat had kittens 11days ago which were very premature, the vet thinks they were atleast 2-3wks premmy.
she had three live kittens but one had died prior to being born(the vet said this is most likely why she had them early).
one died the day he was born, and another died today(causing alot of tears from myself and daughters).
I have been feeding them via an eyedrop with milk formula from vet but to get the kitten to suckle is a losing battle.
the surviving kitten is only 122grams(at 11days!!!)and he is very quiet and hardly moves around.
his mum tries her best to feed him but has hardly any milk.
the vet said he has done all he can for kitty and if i succeed then good but not to expect the last kitty to live, but i cant give up on him.
can anyone give me any advice??.
the wee girl that died today didnt have properly developed organs, especially her wee girl bits so couldnt go to toilet properly, but this wee man has his bits in order.at birth he was82grams so has grown.
please help as i dont want to lose him too.
thank you.

Preemies are extremely difficult to care for because so much is under-developed. You can only do the best you can. Imperative you keep the little one warm. It is best to pouch the little one over your heart if you can. I use an old pillowcase and make like a drawstring purse. Drape the cord over my neck and shoulder and place the little one inside the pillowcase where there are several layers of warm rags for him to lay on. That is the best way to keep preemies with you- they are comforted by your heart and warmed by your body.

Please spay your momcat- she doesn't need to have any more kittens and you certainly don't need this crash course in fading kitten syndrome. :(

Good luck www.kitten-rescue.com  will help as well if you haven't seen it yet.

thank you for your quick reply.
I have been leaving the kitten with his mum as she still tries her hardest to care for him,but will now take him off her and do as you suggest.
yes,his mum is being spayed in 2wks time, she was taken in to be spayed but was already pregnant with this last litter so i was a bit late.
thank you again for great advice,i have read through this forum and hoped it would be you who replied as you have alot of experience.

If mom is in the picture, then it is best to leave the little one with her and supplement the kitten with feedings of nutrical and formula to take the stress off the queen. Be sure and feed the queen KMR, kitten chow, canned food and give her plenty of water. There is no better mom than the queen and we can do all we can with her help. The danger is if the kitten is sickly and starts smelling off to the queen, she will either take it and put it somewhere that predators will find it, or she will kill it herself. So watch the family closely.

Good luck-

thanks,
the wee one seems to be doing well for now, better than he was,he has gained a wee bit of weight, not much but better than none I guess.
he's almost the size of a newborn now.
Is it normal and natural that his mum is only just starting to get milk supply??she hasnt really had much milk(the vet checked her)but it seems she's getting it in now(the litter would've been due around now or the next week).
she looks after wee man and cleans him, sleeps with him etc,but he doesnt have the strength to suckle from her,he tries but only lasts a few seconds and stops,it looks like he has run a marathon!!!,so I still feed him via eyedrop with a formula the vet gave me.
another thing i'm concerned about is the fact he isn't active,he wiggles but it's like his wee legs are extra weak, should I be concerned or is it because he really shouldn't be born yet and will 'catch up' as he gets older?
i've had newborns before but never premmys,I really really want to do all I can for him,my young daughters and I are very attached to him(yes I will end up keeping him)

You can't expect a preemie to respond as a newborn ready to hit the earth does. In the wild when cats mate, queens can be taken by up to three toms at one time. This means that inside of her, she can have more than one family growing. Once the first concieved litter is ready to be born, they push all others out regardless if they are ready or not.

She lost her milk due to the stress of the loss of her kittens. It will come back if she is good producer. If she isn't giving any milk or just a small amount, I would get her spayed and take over the feeding of the preemie myself. But that is me. If you work outside the home, this may not be possible as they have to be fed every 2-3 hours round the clock.

Certainly get her spayed as soon as possible and keep her inside the house. She will go into heat very soon and want the toms in the worst way possible.

You are not out of the woods yet with the preemie, just do all you can and trust God that will He will do the right thing by him.

I would feed him only, let mom still clean and care for him if that is possible? Yes, queens mourn the loss of their kittens and the stress can dry up the milk, or she can just be a young mother and her body doesn't know how to respond.  If she is licking and cleaning him, let that be her job. If she isn't leaving him for long periods of a time, then she is the best provider of warmth for him. We make poor substitutes for the queen. I would also start adding a bit of Nancy's plain yogurt with active cultures in his formula as it will help him immensely.

If you see that she is ignorning him completely, then it falls on you to provide all that he needs- this can become quite a task so coffee becomes your best friend when you are bottle feeding and caring for preemies. Also if he stops responding or breathing, coffee oftentimes jump starts their heart. Not hot coffee, but lukewarm and just a few drops is all that is needed.

best of luck-

his mum still stays with him, hardly leaves his side infact, and when im feeding him she is right beside me.
she is around a year old and quite little herself.
I havent heard of Nancy's yogurt here in New Zealand but I will look for it or one with the active cultures.
I have noticed today his suckling on the eyedrop is alot better,he sucks instead of just sort of slurps.
hahahahaha it is like having a newborn human baby,i get excited at every little milstone.
the vet is checking him on monday when his mum gets spayed.
his sister died of underdeveloped organs so the vet is keeping a close eye on wee man's heart, lungs etc, just to be safe.
I know there is still a chance he may not make it,so i'm taking each day as it comes and give him every chance of survival i can.
your advice is a God send.I wouldnt of known what to do really if I hadnt found this site.

I know how daunting it can be to have such a little one in your care. I stand by ready to help out as much as I possibly can. I have successfully raised preemies over the years to health and put them into loving homes. I have also lost my share of the preemies as well. Two years ago a litter of kittens found in a newly mown hay field were delivered to me. They were days old, the mom had been killed and  how the babies were spared is beyond me. They were all preemies, manx-crosses and none of them had their bowels fully developed. At less than a week old, we had to let them go to the angels despite all our efforts and prayers. Some of the things wrong with stray kittens, even God cannot fix.

You do the best you can and ask a lot of questions. Bless your vet for taking on this job of being the watch person over this kitten. Bless you for taking up this task as well.
