Hello, I have been browsing through the forum and all the information here is great. This is my first post.

About my kitten, we believe she is about 5 months old. She was my boyfriend's sister's kitten, but she was not being taken care of properly, so me and my boyfriend took her in. She is a very outgoing and active kitten. We have named her Mongrel. We have been feeding her Purina Kitten Chow, and occasionly some tuna or wet food. Lately we have been noticing that she is chewing on everything; string, shoelaces, blankets, whatever she can get her mouth on. I did check her mouth and none of her teeth are loose. Is my Mongrel teething, and what can I let her chew on?

She may have a disorder called Pica. This can be dangerous because of what she chews on and internally what can happen to her. I would switch to a better type of food for her, something that is a bit meatier with less filler. Remember a cat's primary food are rodents. www.miceonice.com is also a possibility.  The problem with Pica is that not that much is known about it, or how to treat it. There is one school of thought that believes it is a chemical imbalance and another that believes it is food-related. It is not uncommon and I believe there is even a yahoo group that you can join that brings cat owners together whose cats are suffering from this.  I had one cat long ago that had it, and she used to eat my husband's socks. I found that by giving her two mice a day it stopped her from wanting to eat unhealthier items.

You can google Pica and find all sorts of information about it and also if you go to Yahoo and search for pica the group should still be out there.

Good luck-
